CCH Summerhill Residents have once again demonstrated the power of community and creativity by contributing 24 metres of vibrant, hand-decorated bunting to the Tour Down Under celebrations. This impressive artistic effort was a key part of welcoming cyclists and visitors for the Men’s Stage 3 of the Tour, held today (Thursday 23 January 2025) in the picturesque Adelaide Hills town of Uraidla.

Adding to the excitement, proud participant and Summerhill resident June joined ABC Adelaide radio host Jo Laverty to discuss the incredible teamwork behind the project and the joy of taking part in such a meaningful community initiative. During the interview, June shared how the bunting project had become a source of laughter, connection, and accomplishment for everyone involved.

About the bunting project

The bunting project, which began in December, was much more than an artistic endeavour. Weekly sessions saw residents coming together to paint, plait, cut, staple, and thread the bunting, creating opportunities to nurture fine motor skills and coordination while fostering a strong sense of camaraderie. Positive Ageing Coordinator Enya Hyde highlighted the benefits of this creative journey:

“The residents have put in an incredible effort, and they’ve enjoyed every moment,” Enya said. “From the giggles and chatter during the sessions to the pride in seeing the finished display, this project has truly been a source of joy. It’s also a wonderful way to connect with our wider community.”

The bunting, adorned with bold colours, dazzling flowers, and iconic Australiana imagery, has become part of the town’s vibrant displays vying for recognition in the Santos Best Dressed Town competition. The sense of accomplishment among residents is palpable, as the bunting takes centre stage in welcoming the world’s best cyclists.

CCH CEO Jo Boylan commended the Summerhill residents and staff for their dedication and enthusiasm, underscoring the importance of initiatives like this in fostering community connections:

“This has been a fantastic project and a huge team effort,” Jo said. “We are so proud of our Summerhill residents for their creativity and commitment. Participating in local events like the Tour Down Under strengthens our ties to the community and showcases the vibrant energy within our homes.”

CCH Summerhill residents and staff gathered outside the home today to cheer on the cyclists, proudly watching as their colourful bunting adorned the route. The project serves as a shining example of how creative and artistic endeavours can bring people together, inspire joy, and celebrate the unique contributions of the aged care residents in our care.
